VERY RARE, BLUE TRANSFER COLOURED DECORATED FLAT SOUP BOWL, MARKED, "THE CATHEDRAL OF ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST ERECTED AT NEWFOUNDLAND, xxxx", WITH THE POTTER'S MARK (?), cxxxx, 10 1/4" diameter, with two bottom losses, 1", & 3/4" L, & edge chip. The church featured with people in period dress is in fact, THE BASILICA CATHEDRAL OF ST JOHN THE BAPTIST, ST. JOHN'S, NEWFOUNDLAND, whose excavation started in xxxx, to the laying of the cornerstone in xxxx, & finally completed in xxxx. The picture on the bowl (after an xxxx work by Dublin artist, Charles Henecy) is not the exact image of the actual cathedral; the original builder's (Michael McGrath) plan was altered by a second builder (James Purcell), & there was much fanfare when it was first announced in xxxx that it was being built - all determining the bowl was made before xxxx. The architect was John Philpot Jones of Clonmel, Co. Tipperary, Ireland., & built using Irish (Galway) limestone, & Dublin granite. No examples of this transfer ware pattern can be found in prominent reference books like Collard's Potter's View of Canada, or any museums. Found in Halifax, Nova Scotia. x Henry Dobson Collection.
